The device records air moving into and out of the lungs, helping a clinician assess breathing patterns and lung capacity. During testing, you usually seal your lips around a mouthpiece and follow instructions to breathe normally, inhale deeply and blow out firmly. The result is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination and medical history. It is a measuring instrument, not a treatment, and a reading alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the testing centre’s instructions about medicines, meals and smoking before the appointment. Tell the clinician if you have a recent chest infection, chest pain, dizziness or difficulty performing the manoeuvre. Give your best consistent effort, because technique and coaching affect the recording. The test may be repeated so the clinician can compare efforts or assess a response to a prescribed inhaler.

Tell the testing team immediately if blowing causes severe breathlessness, chest pain, faintness or wheezing that does not settle with rest. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips or new confusion. If a test shows an abnormal pattern, arrange follow-up to discuss what it means rather than trying to interpret the instrument without clinical context.
