Benadryl for sunburn: when itch relief may help

Diphenhydramine does not repair ultraviolet damage, cool the skin or prevent peeling. Because it can cause substantial drowsiness, its possible itch benefit must be weighed against impaired alertness. Confirm the active ingredient on the package because products sold under the same brand may contain different medicines.

Sunburn is an inflammatory response to excessive ultraviolet exposure. Affected skin can become red, hot, tender and later itchy or flaky. More intense injury may produce blisters. These findings are presentations of sunburn, but similar changes can occur with other burns or skin reactions when the history is unclear.

Itching often becomes noticeable as the surface barrier dries and recovers. An antihistamine may blunt some itch sensation, but moisturising and protecting the damaged barrier address a different part of the discomfort.

Leave the sun, cool the skin with a cool shower or damp cloth and drink fluids according to thirst. Apply a gentle fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Do not apply ice directly, break blisters or pull peeling skin. Cover the area with loose clothing and avoid more ultraviolet exposure while it heals.

Before using diphenhydramine, ask a pharmacist if it is compatible with your medicines and health conditions. Avoid driving, alcohol and sedating combinations after taking it. Do not layer topical diphenhydramine over a large burn or combine oral and topical forms without professional advice, as irritated skin may absorb products differently.

Obtain urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, breathing problems or extensive blistering. Burns involving the eyes, face, hands, genitals or a large body area also warrant prompt advice, especially in a young child or medically vulnerable person.

Have the skin checked if pain is worsening rather than settling, or if spreading redness, swelling, pus or fever suggests infection. A rash that appears mainly as itchy bumps after limited sun exposure may represent photosensitivity rather than ordinary sunburn and deserves a different assessment.

Ask whether the skin changes fit uncomplicated sunburn, how to protect any blisters, which moisturiser is suitable and whether your medicines increase sun sensitivity. If itching is disrupting sleep, discuss an option that accounts for daytime alertness and any other sedating drugs.
