Benadryl for hand, foot and mouth disease

Benadryl is a brand commonly associated with diphenhydramine, a sedating antihistamine. HFMD is a viral illness, so symptom care, fluids and monitoring matter more than an antihistamine. Check the active ingredient because products sold under the same brand can differ.

HFMD can cause spots or small blisters on the hands, feet and elsewhere, plus painful mouth ulcers. Diphenhydramine may make an itchy rash feel less bothersome, but it does not shorten the infection, prevent spread or relieve dehydration.

Sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth and blurred vision can occur. Some children become restless rather than sleepy. Do not use it simply to make a child sleep, and do not apply an oral product directly to mouth sores unless a clinician specifically instructs you.

Offer frequent cool drinks and soft foods that do not sting. Keep blisters clean, avoid deliberately opening them and encourage handwashing because the infection spreads readily through close contact and contaminated hands or surfaces.

Before giving diphenhydramine, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether it suits the person's age, health conditions and other medicines. Avoid combining it with another product containing diphenhydramine or with medicines that cause drowsiness. Follow the product label or an individual clinician's directions rather than estimating a dose.

Seek prompt medical advice if mouth pain prevents drinking, urine becomes noticeably less frequent, the person is unusually drowsy, symptoms are worsening, or you are caring for a very young infant or someone with weakened immunity.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, collapse, a seizure, severe confusion, or swelling of the tongue or throat. New breathing difficulty or facial swelling after a medicine can represent a serious allergic reaction and should not be managed by taking more antihistamine at home.

Ask whether the rash pattern fits HFMD, which pain relief is suitable for mouth ulcers, whether diphenhydramine is appropriate for this person's age, and which signs of dehydration should trigger an in-person assessment.
