Belotero Lip Filler: Expectations, Aftercare and Risks

A natural-looking or more noticeable change depends on anatomy, product choice, placement, and the agreed goal. Swelling immediately after injection is not the settled result, and no injector can promise exact symmetry.

Hyaluronic acid gel can add fullness, define the border, support the corners, or balance visible differences between the upper and lower lip. It does not stop normal movement, ageing, or future changes in facial proportions. Existing asymmetry may be softened but may remain because muscle pull, teeth, jaw structure, and scar tissue also shape the lips.

The effect gradually reduces as the gel is broken down. Repeat treatment should be based on reassessment rather than a fixed calendar, especially when residual filler is still present.

Tell the injector about previous lip products, dental procedures, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, medicines, bleeding problems, and any history of cold sores. Injection can trigger a recurrence, so the clinician may discuss preventive treatment when relevant. Never stop a prescribed blood-thinning medicine unless the prescriber advises it.

Expect some tenderness, bruising, firmness, and uneven swelling early on. Follow the provided advice about food, drink, exercise, heat, makeup, and oral hygiene. Keep hands off the injection sites and avoid squeezing or shaping the lips yourself unless specifically directed.

Severe or increasing pain, a lip or nearby skin area turning white, grey, dusky, mottled, cold, or blistered, or swelling that rapidly worsens needs urgent injector assessment. These changes can indicate restricted blood supply. Sudden visual disturbance, eye pain, weakness, facial droop, speech difficulty, or a severe unusual headache requires emergency care.

Later redness, heat, pus, fever, an enlarging tender lump, or cold-sore-like blisters should be reported promptly so infection, viral recurrence, or inflammation can be assessed.

Ask which part of the lip will be treated, how the plan accounts for movement and existing asymmetry, and what the clinician considers a reasonable endpoint. Confirm who provides after-hours advice, how suspected vascular occlusion is managed, and whether hyaluronidase is immediately accessible.
