Belly Itching During the Eighth Month of Pregnancy

A visible irritated patch may reflect eczema, contact with clothing or skin products, hives, or moisture in a fold. Intense itching with little or no rash, particularly on the palms or soles or worse at night, should be reported promptly because pregnancy-related liver problems require clinical testing.

As the abdomen expands, dryness and friction can make the surface itchy. Atopic dermatitis presents with inflamed itchy skin, contact dermatitis follows exposure to an irritant or allergen, and hives appear as raised welts that may move or fade.

A rash beginning in abdominal stretch marks can occur late in pregnancy and may spread, while skin yeast infection tends to affect warm moist folds. The maternity team may need to distinguish these visible eruptions from itching caused by a condition that does not begin with a rash.

Apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser, take lukewarm rather than hot showers, use a cool compress and wear loose breathable fabric. Keep skin folds dry and avoid scratching, perfumed oils and recently introduced products.

Tell your maternity clinician where the itch occurs, whether a rash came first, when it is worst, and whether urine is dark or stools are unusually pale. Check before taking antihistamines or applying steroid, antifungal or herbal preparations, since treatment choice during pregnancy depends on the diagnosis and individual history.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for intense or rapidly worsening itch, symptoms on the palms or soles, widespread itch without a clear rash, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or feeling generally unwell.

Seek immediate care for reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes, sudden facial or hand swelling, breathing trouble, or swelling of the lips or tongue. These warning signs determine urgency regardless of how common itching may be.

Ask whether the pattern needs blood tests, how fetal wellbeing will be monitored if a pregnancy-related condition is suspected, and which moisturiser or medicine is suitable. Clarify whom to contact after hours and which change in itching, rash or fetal movement should prompt another assessment.
