Independent channels may let you tailor intensity for different electrode pairs, but the correct setup depends on the exact model, treatment area and purpose. TENS aims to change pain signalling; EMS produces muscle contractions. Neither mode identifies or cures the cause of pain.

Each active channel controls an electrode pair, so sensation can be balanced across separate areas or around one broader region. An independent intensity setting matters because skin sensitivity and electrode contact can differ from one site to another. Confirm in the model manual whether programs, timing and mode selection are also controlled separately.

TENS should usually feel strong but comfortable without forcing a muscle contraction. EMS intentionally creates a visible or felt contraction, which means placement and intensity need more care, particularly after injury, surgery or prolonged inactivity.

Read the supplied instructions, connect the leads before increasing intensity, and apply complete electrode pairs to clean, dry, intact skin. Start every channel at its lowest setting and raise it gradually. Keep pads separated as the manual directs, inspect the skin after use, and replace pads that no longer adhere evenly.

Do not place electrodes across the chest, on the front or sides of the neck, over the head, or on numb, irritated or infected skin. Seek professional advice before use if you have an implanted electrical device, a heart rhythm condition, epilepsy, are pregnant, or recently had surgery.

Turn the unit off if stimulation causes burning, marked skin irritation, dizziness, unusual breathlessness, chest discomfort or worsening pain. Obtain urgent medical care for chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe pain after a major injury; electrical stimulation should not delay assessment of these symptoms.

Arrange a clinical review when pain persists, repeatedly returns, spreads, or is accompanied by weakness or altered sensation. A clinician can assess the underlying problem and decide whether TENS, EMS or another approach fits your needs.
