A partial product name is not enough to use the medicine safely. Check the active ingredient, tablet strength, packaging, expiry date and dispensing label. Do not use tablets from an unverified seller or follow another person's regimen, because instructions differ according to the clinical purpose and pregnancy circumstances.

Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and can soften the cervix. In women's health care it may form part of medical management of miscarriage or induction of labour; the setting, route and accompanying medicines are selected for the specific situation. It also has uses outside pregnancy care. Expected effects and monitoring therefore cannot be inferred from the medicine name alone.

Cramping, bleeding, nausea, diarrhoea, chills or a temporary feverish feeling can occur, depending on why and how it is used. Your care team should distinguish anticipated effects from signs that require examination.

Use misoprostol only for the indication and by the route written in your personal instructions. Tell the prescriber about a possible pregnancy, previous caesarean birth or uterine surgery, an intrauterine device, bleeding disorders, anticoagulants, allergies and other medicines. Confirm whom to call, what bleeding and pain to expect, which pain relief is suitable, and whether follow-up testing or examination is planned.

Follow the treating service's urgent-care thresholds for bleeding and pain. Seek immediate assessment for fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, severe or worsening abdominal pain, bleeding that rapidly soaks pads, confusion, or feeling seriously unwell. Persistent fever, offensive-smelling discharge or pain that intensifies rather than settles also warrants prompt clinical advice. In pregnancy, severe one-sided pain or shoulder-tip pain with dizziness requires emergency evaluation.

Ask what diagnosis or procedure the medicine is for, where each tablet should be placed or swallowed, when the care team expects a response, and what to do if vomiting occurs or a dose is missed. Clarify follow-up arrangements and the exact symptoms that should take you to emergency care rather than waiting for a callback.
