Belching and farting a lot: what to know

Short answer

Belching and farting a lot often come from swallowed air, digestion of certain foods, or an underlying digestive problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Belching
Air leaving the upper digestive tract
Farting
Gas passing from the bowel
Track
Meals, drinks, timing, and bowel changes

What it can mean

Belching releases air from the upper digestive tract. Farting, or passing wind, happens when bacteria break down food in the large bowel. Eating quickly, chewing gum, drinking fizzy drinks, smoking, or talking while eating can increase swallowed air. Beans, onions, some vegetables, and lactose-containing foods may create more gas, especially if your body handles them poorly.

Bloating, burning behind the breastbone, upper abdominal discomfort, or sour fluid can occur with acid reflux. Upper abdominal pain or nausea may accompany gastritis, while recurring abdominal pain with altered bowel habits can occur with irritable bowel syndrome. These symptoms do not identify a condition by themselves.

Practical steps

Keep a brief diary of meals, drinks, eating speed, bowel changes, and symptoms. Eat slowly, take smaller mouthfuls, and reduce fizzy drinks and gum for a trial period. Change one suspected food at a time so you can recognise a pattern. Regular movement may help gas pass more comfortably.

Do not start a restrictive diet or stop prescribed medicine without advice. A clinician can review constipation, food intolerance, reflux, and medicines that may contribute. If reflux symptoms are present, ask whether acid reflux medication is suitable for you.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical appointment if the change persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep or activities, or comes with ongoing pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, or loss of appetite. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with inability to pass stool or gas, vomiting blood, black stools, chest pain, or trouble breathing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could reflux, gastritis, constipation, food intolerance, or irritable bowel syndrome explain this pattern? Which symptoms should prompt urgent help? Should I have testing for Helicobacter pylori infection, and which dietary changes are reasonable?

Questions people ask

Can swallowed air cause both symptoms?

Yes. Fast eating, gum, fizzy drinks, smoking, and talking while eating can increase swallowed air and belching; some air also travels into the bowel.

When should frequent gas be checked?

Book an appointment for persistent or disruptive symptoms, especially with pain, bowel changes, vomiting, weight loss, or trouble swallowing.
