Behavioral observation audiometry

The audiologist may watch for a pause in movement, eye widening, a head turn, searching for the sound, or a change in facial expression. Sounds can be delivered through speakers or earphones, depending on the child's age and the purpose of testing. The response is interpreted alongside developmental stage, alertness, attention, and the surrounding room. Because an observed reaction does not identify the exact hearing threshold by itself, the result may be one part of a wider hearing assessment.

Bring the child rested and ready to engage, and share details about speech, responses to voices, ear infections, noise exposure, and any hearing devices. Keep your face neutral while sounds are presented so the child does not follow visual clues. Follow the audiologist's guidance about comforting or holding the child. Earwax buildup may affect the result and can be checked separately. A hearing test may include methods that provide more precise ear-specific information when observation is limited.

Seek prompt advice if a child suddenly stops responding to sounds, has ear pain or drainage, or develops balance problems. Arrange follow-up when speech or language progress concerns persist, responses differ between ears, or the observation session could not produce dependable reactions. Hearing changes with repeated dizziness or a sensation of ear pressure also deserve clinical review, including consideration of Meniere's disease in suitable cases.

Ask what reactions were seen, whether the findings apply to each ear, how development and attention affected the session, and whether another hearing test is recommended.
