Behavioral audiometry

An audiologist presents tones or speech through headphones, earphones, or speakers. The person may respond by raising a hand, pressing a button, turning towards a sound, or completing a simple listening task. The method is adapted to age, communication ability, and attention. For young children, sounds may be paired with a visual reward or a play activity. The results help show hearing thresholds for each ear and whether responses are consistent enough to guide next steps.

Bring information about hearing concerns, ear infections, noise exposure, medicines, and any previous hearing results. Explain how the person communicates and whether they use hearing devices. During the test, respond only when a sound is heard and tell the audiologist if instructions are unclear. Earwax buildup can interfere with sound reaching the eardrum, so an ear examination may be useful before interpreting results. A hearing test may include other checks as well.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, new one-sided hearing change, severe ear pain, drainage, or dizziness with hearing symptoms. Follow up when a child does not respond to everyday sounds, speech development seems delayed, or test responses are inconsistent. Meniere's disease can involve hearing change with episodes of vertigo and ear fullness, which should be discussed with a clinician.

Ask which part of the hearing pathway the results assess, whether both ears responded consistently, what additional tests may help, and when hearing should be checked again.
