What should you know about beginning signs of tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by a toxin that affects the nervous system. Stiffness can begin around the jaw and then involve the neck, back, abdomen, or other muscles. A wound may be small or already healing, so its appearance does not reliably show the level of risk. Tetanus is a medical emergency and cannot be diagnosed safely from symptoms alone.

If jaw stiffness or unusual muscle spasms follow a wound, puncture, burn, bite, or contaminated injury, seek emergency medical assessment immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to spread. Tell the clinician when the injury happened, how it was cleaned, and when you last received Tetanus Vaccination, if known. Keep the wound clean while arranging help, without delaying urgent care.

Call emergency services for breathing or swallowing difficulty, repeated spasms, severe stiffness, confusion, or collapse. Any possible tetanus symptoms require urgent assessment, even when the wound seems minor or pain is limited.
