Short answer

Before treating uneven skin tone, identify its cause; afterward, judge gradual pigment change while protecting skin from light and irritation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Identify whether pigment, redness or pigment loss is present

Gentle care and consistent light protection

Comparable photos showing borders and contrast

The short answer

Patchy colour can reflect extra pigment, reduced pigment, visible redness or a combination. Because these changes respond differently, a treatment chosen only from appearance may aggravate contrast rather than improve it.

What may sit behind patchy colour

Melasma commonly presents with symmetrical brown or grey-brown facial patches. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation develops where acne, eczema, injury or irritation has healed, while sun spots tend to form on repeatedly exposed areas. Texture, scale, itch and the pattern of distribution help distinguish these from other causes.

Progress photographs are easiest to compare when the camera, angle and lighting stay consistent. Look for changes in the borders and contrast as well as overall brightness; temporary redness after a procedure can otherwise be mistaken for darker pigment.

Building a cautious care plan

Start with gentle cleansing, moisturiser and broad-spectrum sun protection. Shade, hats and reapplication during outdoor exposure support sunscreen, especially in the UAE's intense light. Avoid picking spots and introduce active products separately so irritation can be traced to a specific product.

A dermatologist may tailor topical lightening treatment, a chemical peel, skin-brightening care or a light-based procedure to the diagnosis and skin type. Strong peels and unsuitable energy settings can cause burns or post-inflammatory pigment, so treatment parameters and aftercare matter. Expect comparison over time rather than a single dramatic endpoint.

When a colour change needs examination

Arrange a skin check for a new or changing individual spot, especially one with an irregular outline, several colours, bleeding, crusting, persistent soreness or rapid enlargement. A widespread colour change with illness, a new medicine or involvement of the mouth also warrants medical review.

After a cosmetic procedure, seek prompt advice for blistering, severe pain, open skin, increasing swelling, pus or spreading redness. Stop any non-prescribed product that causes marked burning and bring its ingredient list to the appointment.

Choosing treatment with your dermatologist

Ask whether the colour represents pigment, redness or loss of pigment; which trigger should be controlled first; how your skin type affects the chance of irritation; and what aftercare follows a peel or IPL. Clarify which photographs or examination findings will be used to judge progress.

Questions people ask

Can uneven skin tone be treated with one brightening product?

Not reliably. Melasma, inflammation-related pigment, sun spots and reduced pigment have different mechanisms, so the diagnosis guides product choice.

Why can dark marks worsen after irritation?

Inflammation can signal pigment-producing cells to make extra pigment, particularly in skin that readily develops post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Is IPL suitable for every type of uneven tone?

No. Suitability depends on the cause, skin type, current sun exposure and device settings; some pigment disorders can worsen with poorly matched treatment.
