Short answer

Before plantar fascia release, clarify why surgery is recommended; afterward, protect the wound and follow the surgeon's weight-bearing and rehabilitation plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
The procedure reduces tension by releasing part of the plantar fascia.
Early priority
Protect the incision and observe the stated weight-bearing limit.
Rehabilitation
Movement, strength, footwear and activity advance in stages.

Direct answer

The operation releases part of the tight plantar fascia to reduce tension at the heel. Recovery is progressive: the incision must heal, walking mechanics must settle and the foot must rebuild mobility and strength.

What changes with surgery

The plantar fascia supports the arch and helps the foot manage load during walking. Releasing too little may leave tension, while releasing too much may alter arch support, so the planned extent and surgical approach matter. The procedure may be open or performed through smaller portals, depending on the case and surgeon.

Heel discomfort does not always come from the plantar fascia. Before proceeding, the clinical assessment may consider nerve irritation, stress injury, inflammatory disease and pain from the heel's cushioning tissues.

Prepare and recover

Before the operation, review medicines and supplements, smoking, diabetes control, allergies, anaesthetic planning and arrangements for transport and help at home. Ask when to stop eating or drinking and whether crutches, a postoperative shoe or a boot will be needed.

Afterward, keep the dressing clean and dry as directed, elevate the foot, and use prescribed pain relief. Follow the specific weight-bearing limit rather than testing the foot early. Begin approved ankle, toe and calf exercises when instructed, then progress footwear and activity according to wound healing and gait.

When recovery needs review

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, a wound that opens, pain that is escalating rather than settling, or toes that become pale, blue, cold or persistently numb. A tight dressing with worsening pressure also needs advice.

Seek emergency assessment for chest pain, severe shortness of breath or fainting. New calf swelling and tenderness require urgent medical evaluation. A sudden pop, fall or inability to use the foot as previously instructed should be reported.

Questions that shape expectations

Ask what findings confirm the plantar fascia as the pain source, which portion will be released, and what alternatives remain. Clarify when you may shower, drive, work, bear weight, change footwear and restart sport. Also ask how rehabilitation will address calf flexibility, foot strength and walking pattern.

Questions people ask

Will I walk immediately after plantar fascia release?

That depends on the surgical approach and your surgeon's instructions. You may need protected weight-bearing, a special shoe, a boot or crutches.

Why might heel pain continue during early recovery?

The incision and deeper tissues need time to settle, while stiffness, weakness and an altered walking pattern can also contribute. A worsening or unexpected pattern should be reviewed.

Is physiotherapy always started straight away?

Timing varies with the wound, procedure and weight-bearing plan. Use only the exercises and progression approved by your treating team.
