Before and after treatment for actinic cheilitis

Before treatment, the lower lip often shows chronic dryness, scale, colour change or a blurred border after long-term sun exposure. Because actinic cheilitis can contain precancerous change and may progress, a lasting suspicious area needs medical assessment rather than cosmetic camouflage.

The condition affects sun-damaged lip skin and may be uneven across the lip. A clinician may examine the entire area and sample a thickened, ulcerated or persistent focus before selecting treatment.

Healing differs by method. A topical medicine can create inflammation and erosion across treated skin, while laser or photodynamic approaches can cause swelling, weeping and crust formation. These expected reactions should follow the pattern explained by the dermatologist; a smoother lip after healing does not remove the need for future surveillance.

Use prescribed treatment only on the area and schedule directed. Do not pick crusts or add fragranced balms, exfoliants or unapproved remedies to inflamed skin. Follow the wound-care plan, keep the lip clean as advised and attend the planned healing check.

Reduce further ultraviolet exposure with shade, a broad-brimmed hat and a suitable high-protection lip product that is reapplied as directed. Examine the lips regularly in good light and note any focal change that returns after the wider area has healed.

Arrange prompt dermatology assessment for a lip sore that does not heal, a firm or enlarging lump, repeated bleeding, a deep ulcer, increasing tenderness or a persistent localised thick patch. These features do not establish cancer by themselves, but they may require biopsy rather than observation.

During recovery, contact the treating team for uncontrolled pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, dehydration from difficulty drinking or swelling that is worsening beyond the expected treatment reaction. Seek urgent care if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing.

Ask whether any area needs biopsy, which treatment fits the extent and depth of change, what reaction is expected day by day and how pain and eating will be managed. Clarify when the lip will be re-examined, what incomplete clearance looks like and which recurrent signs should trigger an earlier appointment.
