Propecia is a brand of oral finasteride used for male pattern hair loss. It does not produce an overnight cosmetic change, and stopping treatment can allow the underlying hair-loss process to resume.
How to interpret hair changes
Finasteride reduces conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a hormone involved in follicle miniaturisation in androgenetic alopecia. Its role depends on the diagnosis; scarring alopecia, sudden shedding and patchy hair loss need a different assessment.
Track the same scalp areas with dry hair, similar length, unchanged styling and matching light. Hair cycles are slow, so comparisons over months are more informative than daily mirror checks. Changes at the crown and hairline may not be identical.
Use it as a monitored prescription
Take finasteride exactly as prescribed and discuss other medicines, fertility plans, sexual symptoms, breast changes, mood history and planned blood tests with the prescriber. Do not take extra tablets after a missed dose unless specifically instructed.
Pregnant people, or those who could be pregnant, should not handle crushed or broken tablets because finasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may harm a developing male fetus. Keep the medicine in its original packaging and do not share it. Schedule follow-up to review both hair response and tolerability.
Symptoms to report
Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, or a severe widespread rash. Contact the prescriber about persistent sexual difficulties, low mood, thoughts of self-harm, testicular pain, breast tenderness, a breast lump or nipple discharge.
Rapid shedding, smooth bald patches, scalp pain, marked scaling or loss accompanied by eyebrow changes deserves diagnostic review because pattern hair loss may not explain it.
