Treating bed bug bites on the face

Avoid scratching and keep non-prescribed medicated products away from the eyes. Facial bumps have many possible causes, so persistent, painful or unusual lesions should be assessed before stronger treatment is used.

Facial skin is more visible and certain areas, especially the eyelids, are sensitive to irritation. A medicine that is acceptable on an arm or leg may be too strong close to the eyes or unsuitable for repeated facial use.

Treatment controls the skin reaction; it does not prove which insect caused it or clear an infestation. New bites can continue until bed bugs and their hiding places in the room are dealt with. Acne, eczema, contact reactions and skin infection may require a different plan.

Rinse the affected skin with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, pat rather than rub, and use a clean cool compress. Pause scrubs, acids, retinoids and fragranced products on irritated areas. Leave bumps intact and keep nails smooth to limit damage during sleep.

For troublesome itching, a pharmacist can check whether an oral antihistamine is compatible with your medicines and activities, since some can cause drowsiness. A clinician may recommend a suitable topical corticosteroid for a limited course, but the product, location and duration matter on the face. Do not place it on eyelids unless directed.

Inspect bedding, mattress seams, furniture joints and luggage, and use an experienced pest-control service when available. Laundering and room treatment must follow safe product instructions; applying insecticide to the face or body is unsafe.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, faintness, throat tightness, or swelling of the mouth or tongue. Obtain prompt care for eye pain, impaired vision, extensive eyelid swelling, rapidly spreading redness, escalating tenderness, pus or fever.

Book a routine assessment when marks do not improve, recur without evidence of bed bugs, leave persistent colour change, or interfere with sleep. Bring photographs showing how the rash evolved and a list of products already tried.

Ask which medicine is appropriate for the exact facial area, how it should be applied, what side effects should prompt stopping, and whether another diagnosis is possible. Mention glaucoma, eye disease, pregnancy, allergies and all current medicines.
