What should you know about bed bug bites after scratching?

A scratched bite may look raw, crusted, or more inflamed than an untouched bite. These changes can come from physical irritation alone, but increasing pain, warmth, spreading redness, pus, or fever needs medical attention.

The itch-scratch cycle can keep the area inflamed: itching prompts rubbing or scratching, which damages the skin barrier and triggers more irritation. Fingernails may also transfer bacteria into broken skin. Darker or lighter marks can remain after inflammation settles, especially when bites are repeatedly picked.

Bed bug bites can resemble other itchy skin problems, so the appearance alone does not confirm the cause. Clues in the sleeping area and a professional pest inspection are more useful for identifying an infestation than the shape or arrangement of marks by itself.

Wash your hands, then gently clean the affected skin with mild soap and water. Pat it dry rather than rubbing. A cool compress can calm itch and swelling. Keep nails short, avoid picking crusts, and cover an open area with a clean, non-stick dressing if clothing keeps rubbing it.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine or a topical corticosteroid is appropriate for itching and inflammation. Do not apply steroid cream to broken or infected-looking skin unless a clinician specifically advises it. Treating the home infestation is also necessary to prevent new bites.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness is expanding, the skin feels increasingly hot or painful, swelling is worsening, pus or cloudy drainage appears, red streaks develop, or you feel feverish or unwell. These findings may indicate a skin infection that needs treatment.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, faintness, or a rapidly spreading severe reaction. People with extensive skin damage, reduced immunity, or a condition that slows wound healing should seek advice early rather than waiting for the area to worsen.
