Bed Bug Bites on Black and Brown Skin

Raised, itchy bumps may appear in a cluster or line on skin exposed during sleep. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause; checking the sleeping area for signs of bed bugs helps put the skin changes in context.

Inflammation can be easier to notice by touch than by colour on deeply pigmented skin. Look for swelling, warmth, tenderness, a central dot, or a change from your usual skin tone. Itching may begin before a visible mark becomes obvious.

As bumps settle, they can leave flat darker marks called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Scratching and picking make this colour change more likely and can break the skin. Similar-looking bumps may come from eczema, folliculitis, contact irritation, or other insect bites, so distribution and exposure clues matter.

Wash gently, apply a cool compress, and avoid fragranced products over irritated areas. Keep nails short and cover easily scratched bumps with clean, breathable clothing. Skin treatment does not remove bed bugs. Inspect mattress seams and nearby furniture, launder suitable fabrics with heat, and arrange professional pest control when infestation is suspected. Avoid applying insecticide directly to skin.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Arrange prompt assessment if pain, heat, pus, worsening swelling, fever, or red streaking develops, because broken skin may have become infected.

A dermatologist can assess marks that persist, recur without a clear exposure, blister extensively, or leave troublesome pigment change. Photographing the area in consistent lighting can help show changes that are difficult to see during a brief appointment.
