Beaver fever symptoms explained

The nickname refers to giardiasis, a Giardia infection of the small intestine. Stools may become loose, pale, greasy, or difficult to flush. Some people develop appetite loss, weight loss, dehydration, or lingering fatigue. Others have few symptoms or none, even though they may pass the parasite to someone else.

Symptoms can follow untreated water, contaminated food, childcare exposure, household spread, or travel. A symptom pattern cannot confirm Giardia by itself. A healthcare professional may consider other infections, medication effects, or digestive conditions as well.

Replace fluids with frequent sips of safe water or oral rehydration solution. Choose foods you can tolerate and rest. Wash hands with soap, keep towels personal, clean toilet surfaces, and wash any items soiled with stool. Avoid swimming and preparing food for others while you have diarrhoea.

If symptoms do not settle, contact a clinician about stool testing. Prescription treatment may be appropriate after an assessment; avoid using antidiarrhoeal or antimicrobial medicines without checking that they are suitable for you.

Book medical advice for diarrhoea that continues, repeated symptoms, weight loss, or suspected contaminated-water exposure. Seek urgent care for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, very little urine, or vomiting that prevents fluid intake. Get earlier advice for young children, older adults, pregnancy, or weakened immunity.

Record when symptoms began, how often you pass stool, any stool changes, recent water or travel exposure, and whether other household members are ill. Ask when testing is needed and how to prevent passing the infection on.
