Treating a Bartholin cyst at home

Home treatment is not a substitute for examination when symptoms suggest an abscess or the diagnosis is uncertain. Do not attempt to lance or drain the lump yourself; a clinician can create a controlled opening and manage infection when necessary.

Bartholin glands lie on either side of the vaginal opening. A blocked duct can retain gland fluid, producing a soft or firm lump that may cause little discomfort. When the contents become infected, the resulting abscess tends to bring stronger tenderness and may be accompanied by redness, warmth, drainage, or feeling unwell.

Other skin, vaginal, or vulval conditions can also produce a lump. A healthcare professional can assess its exact location and features, especially when it is new, unusual, recurring, or not improving.

Soak the affected area in clean, comfortably warm water at intervals during the day. Dry by patting, wear loose clothing and breathable underwear, and pause cycling, sexual activity, or other activities that increase pressure until comfortable. Use non-prescription pain medicine only if it is normally safe for you and according to the package directions.

Avoid perfumed intimate products, harsh antiseptics, herbal preparations, and attempts to squeeze or pierce the cyst. Should it burst naturally, allow free drainage, wash gently with water, place a clean pad in your underwear, and observe whether pain and swelling begin to ease.

Arrange prompt care when the swelling enlarges quickly, pain is severe or worsening, redness spreads, pus smells unpleasant, or fever, chills, weakness, or other signs of illness develop. Difficulty urinating, walking, or sitting because of the swelling warrants urgent assessment.

Have a persistent or repeatedly returning lump checked rather than extending home treatment indefinitely. A first lump after menopause also deserves clinical evaluation. Depending on the findings, care may involve drainage, medicine for infection, placement of a small device to maintain drainage, or marsupialisation for recurrence.

Consider asking what confirms the diagnosis, whether there are signs of an abscess, and whether a sample or infection check is appropriate. Clarify how to wash and dress the area after treatment, which symptoms require a rapid return, and which procedure could reduce repeated blockage.
