Bartholin gland home remedies: what can help

Home care is most suitable while a lump is small, discomfort is manageable, and there are no signs of worsening infection. A painful, enlarging, or persistent swelling may need examination and drainage by a clinician.

The Bartholin glands sit near the vaginal opening and release lubricating fluid through small ducts. If a duct becomes blocked, fluid can collect and form a cyst. Infection can turn the swelling into an abscess, which is often more tender, red, hot, or difficult to sit or walk with.

A new lump in this area is not always a Bartholin cyst. Its position, appearance, tenderness, and your age and health history help a clinician decide whether an examination or another test is needed.

Sit in comfortably warm, plain water several times through the day, then pat the area dry with a clean towel. Choose loose, breathable underwear and reduce activities that rub or press on the swelling. If you can normally take an over-the-counter pain reliever, follow its label and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have a long-term condition.

Do not squeeze the lump, insert a needle, or apply essential oils, antiseptics, toothpaste, or harsh washes. If it opens by itself, let it drain without pressure, keep the area clean and dry, use a clean pad for discharge, and wash your hands before and after care.

Seek prompt medical assessment if pain becomes severe, swelling grows quickly, pus or a foul-smelling discharge appears, the skin becomes increasingly red or hot, or you develop fever, chills, weakness, or feel generally unwell. Urgent help is appropriate if pain or swelling makes walking, sitting, or passing urine difficult.

Book an appointment if the lump does not settle, repeatedly returns, or appears for the first time after menopause. A clinician may recommend antibiotics when infection is present or a drainage procedure when trapped fluid cannot escape adequately.
