Medicine for a Bartholin gland cyst

A clinician may suggest a suitable pain reliever and warm-water soaks for comfort. Antibiotics are not routinely needed for every cyst; they may be prescribed when examination suggests infection or when surrounding skin is affected.

Pain medicine targets soreness, not the blocked duct. Antibiotics target susceptible bacteria, but a painful collection of pus may still need a procedure to let it drain. Do not use leftover antibiotics, share a prescription, or put antiseptics and unprescribed creams inside the vulva.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy, allergies, stomach ulcers, kidney or liver problems, blood-thinning medicines, and everything else you take. These details affect which pain reliever or antibiotic is appropriate.

Use prescribed medicine exactly as labelled. Warm sitz baths may encourage natural drainage and reduce discomfort. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose underwear, and avoid squeezing, piercing, or cutting the lump because this can injure tissue and spread infection.

Arrange an examination if the lump persists, returns, enlarges, or makes sitting or walking difficult. A clinician can confirm whether it is a Bartholin cyst and discuss drainage options, including marsupialisation for selected recurring cysts.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, rapidly worsening swelling, spreading redness, severe pain, feeling faint or very unwell, or foul-smelling discharge. These features can accompany an abscess or spreading infection and should not be managed with pain medicine alone.

A new lump near the vaginal opening also deserves clinical assessment if you are older, if it feels firm or fixed, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Other vulval conditions can resemble a Bartholin cyst.

Ask whether the lump appears infected, which pain relief is safe with your health history, whether a swab or other assessment is useful, and what change would mean you need drainage. If cysts recur, ask how an office drainage procedure differs from marsupialisation.
