Managing a Bartholin cyst while on your period

You can continue normal menstrual hygiene, changing products regularly and washing the vulva gently with water. Choose the period product that feels least irritating, and avoid pressing or trying to drain the lump yourself.

A Bartholin cyst forms when the duct from a gland near the vaginal opening becomes blocked and fluid collects. Menstrual blood does not pass through that duct, so a period is not expected to empty the cyst or make it spread.

Pads can rub against a tender swelling, while prolonged dampness may make the surface feel irritated. Tampons or menstrual cups sit inside the vagina and do not treat the cyst; insertion may still be uncomfortable if the swelling narrows or presses near the entrance.

Use an unscented product that does not rub the lump, change it as needed, and pat rather than scrub when cleaning. Warm water soaks or a warm compress may reduce soreness. Breathable underwear and loose clothing can also limit friction.

If inserting a tampon or cup hurts, stop and use an external product until the area settles or is assessed. Note whether the lump changes independently of your cycle, and arrange a clinical examination if it persists, returns, enlarges, or interferes with sitting and walking.

Contact a clinician promptly for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, hot or red skin, pus, fever, chills, or feeling unwell. These signs may indicate an abscess rather than ordinary irritation from a period product.

Get help if bleeding seems to come from the lump rather than the vagina, or if drainage has a strong unpleasant smell. Heavy vaginal bleeding, faintness, or severe pelvic pain also needs assessment as a separate menstrual concern.

Ask whether the swelling is a cyst or abscess, which menstrual products will avoid pressure on its location, and whether drainage is needed. Mention any discharge, fever, recurring episodes, pain with insertion, or medicines you have already taken.
