Why is a Bartholin cyst still hard after draining?

Draining fluid reduces pressure but does not always remove the cyst lining or clear inflammation immediately. The tissue can feel firm while it settles, and a small opening can close before fluid has fully drained. Persistent or increasing hardness may also mean the cyst has refilled or that an abscess remains. Pain, heat, redness, pus, or feverishness make infection more concerning than firmness alone. A clinician needs to inspect the area to judge healing.

Follow the aftercare instructions you were given and keep the area clean. Warm water may ease soreness, but do not force fluid out, probe the opening, or apply unapproved creams. Arrange review if the lump stays hard, enlarges, becomes painful, or returns after seeming to improve. The clinician may discuss a drainage method that keeps an opening available, such as marsupialisation, when recurrence or ongoing blockage is a concern.

Contact your care team promptly for worsening pain, new redness or warmth, pus, feverishness, or difficulty sitting or walking. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, faintness, or feeling seriously ill. Any persistent firm lump deserves examination, especially after menopause or when it was never assessed before drainage.

Ask whether the firmness fits normal healing, whether the cyst has refilled, how to care for the opening, and when a repeat examination is needed.
