Where is a Bartholin cyst located?

The Bartholin glands sit on either side of the lower vaginal entrance. A blocked duct can create a rounded swelling on one side of the vulva. A small cyst may be noticed only while washing, walking, sitting, or having sex. If bacteria enter the trapped fluid, the area may become an abscess with worsening tenderness, warmth, redness, or drainage. The swelling itself does not establish its cause, so an examination is useful when it is new, persistent, or changing.

Keep the area gently clean and dry, wear loose underwear, and avoid squeezing, cutting, or repeatedly pressing the lump. Warm baths or a warm compress may ease discomfort. Do not put products inside the vagina or over broken skin unless a clinician has advised it. A clinician can check whether the swelling is a cyst, an abscess, or another vulval problem; treatment may involve drainage or a procedure that leaves an opening for ongoing drainage.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain is increasing, sitting or walking is difficult, the swelling is hot or red, pus is present, or you feel feverish or unwell. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, faintness, or feeling seriously ill. If you are older or the lump is firm, unusual, or does not settle, ask a clinician to examine it rather than assuming it is a cyst.
