Understanding a Bartholin cyst that does not hurt

The Bartholin glands release lubricating fluid through narrow ducts beside the vaginal opening. When a duct is blocked, retained fluid may form a soft swelling without stretching tissue enough to hurt. A lump without pain can therefore fit a cyst, although pain level does not identify the cause on its own.

Become familiar with the lump's location and whether it changes in size, but avoid frequent pressing. New pain, warmth, redness, rapid enlargement, pus-like fluid, unpleasant odour or fever can appear if infection develops. A larger uninfected cyst may also create pressure during walking, sitting or sex even without constant pain.

A lump that feels hard, remains fixed, changes the overlying skin or causes unexplained bleeding needs medical review rather than continued observation.

After a clinician confirms a small, symptom-free Bartholin cyst, observation may be all that is required. Wash the vulva gently, avoid fragranced products that irritate the area and choose clothing that does not create friction. Warm-water bathing is optional if there is no discomfort.

Trying to pop or drain a cyst that does not hurt can cause injury or introduce bacteria, so leave it alone. If it begins to affect daily activities or repeatedly enlarges, arrange reassessment; drainage methods can be considered according to symptoms, examination and prior episodes.

Have a clinician identify any newly noticed lump near the vaginal opening, because several skin, gland and soft-tissue conditions can occur there. Seek especially prompt review for a new Bartholin-area lump after age 40 or after menopause, even if it does not hurt; further evaluation or tissue sampling may be advised.

Move the visit forward if the swelling grows, becomes painful or red, starts draining, causes fever, or makes you feel unwell. Severe pain or rapidly spreading inflammation calls for urgent care.

You might ask how the diagnosis was made, which changes should trigger another visit, and whether the cyst needs a scheduled recheck.
