Can a Bartholin cyst be higher up?

Large swellings can extend beyond their starting point, however, and self-examination cannot reliably identify the tissue of origin.

The Bartholin ducts open near the lower rear portion of the vaginal entrance. A small blockage is generally felt close to that area and commonly affects one side. As a cyst enlarges, its upper edge may be felt farther along the vulva even though it began lower down.

A distinct bump higher on the outer or inner vulval tissue could instead arise from skin, a hair follicle, another gland, or a different cyst. Appearance and touch overlap, so position guides assessment but does not settle the diagnosis.

Arrange an examination for a new lump that seems above the expected Bartholin area. Describe its precise side and location, whether it lies in the skin or feels deeper, and any change in size, tenderness, discharge, or nearby skin.

While waiting, minimise rubbing, keep the area gently clean, and use comfortable warmth if sore. Do not squeeze it or apply harsh antiseptics. Treatment such as Bartholin cyst drainage or marsupialisation is appropriate only when the clinician confirms the source.

Seek urgent care if swelling increases quickly, pain becomes intense, redness spreads, pus appears, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Also get help promptly if swelling interferes with urination or makes walking very difficult.

A firm fixed mass, irregular edges, persistent ulceration, unexplained bleeding, or ongoing enlargement warrants timely clinical review even when it is not painful. These features determine the need for escalation rather than assumptions based on location alone.

Ask which structure the lump appears to come from, whether it connects to the Bartholin duct, and whether examination is enough to identify it. If uncertainty remains, ask whether imaging, drainage, or sampling would help and what changes should trigger an earlier return.
