When a Bartholin-area lump feels rock hard

A tense cyst, inflamed tissue, an old scar, or a different vulval growth can feel unusually solid. An in-person examination is the appropriate next step.

Bartholin glands sit deep beside the lower part of the vaginal entrance. A blockage there can produce a rounded swelling, and tightly stretched tissue may be described as rock hard. Fingers cannot reliably distinguish tense fluid from solid tissue.

During an assessment, the clinician checks whether the mass is in the expected gland area, moves under the skin, has defined edges, and is tender or inflamed. A lump that is higher, fixed, irregular, or separate from that site may need a different evaluation.

Contact a gynaecology or primary-care service for an examination, particularly when the hardness is new or persists. Note when you first noticed the lump and whether its size, pain, skin colour, or discharge has changed.

Use a comfortably warm compress for relief and choose clothing that does not rub. Avoid repeatedly pressing the lump to test it, and never insert a needle or sharp object. Clinical drainage may be offered when trapped fluid or infection is found.

Obtain urgent advice if pain becomes severe, swelling expands quickly, redness spreads, or you develop fever, chills, weakness, pus, or trouble urinating. A painful abscess can worsen over a short period and may need a procedure.

Even without fever, arrange prompt review for skin ulceration, unexplained bleeding, an uneven or fixed mass, or a lump that continues to grow. Urgency comes from these warning features, not from guessing which diagnosis is common.

You might ask: Is this definitely arising from the Bartholin gland? Does it appear fluid-filled or solid? Would a scan or tissue test clarify the diagnosis? If treatment is required, ask how drainage is maintained and how the wound should be cleaned afterward.
