Duration depends on whether the blocked duct reopens, how much fluid has collected, and whether infection develops. A small cyst without pain may be noticed only by chance and can remain stable. An abscess tends to become tender and swollen as inflammation builds. Even after spontaneous or medical drainage, the area may feel thickened while surrounding tissue heals, so size and symptoms matter more than a fixed timetable.

Notice whether pressure, tenderness, and the size of the lump are easing rather than checking it repeatedly or squeezing it. Comfortably warm-water soaks can soothe a small uncomplicated cyst and may support drainage. Wear clothing that limits friction and avoid puncturing the swelling. If you have had a procedure, follow its specific wound, catheter, bathing, and activity instructions instead of relying on general self-care.

Book an assessment when a lump remains, repeatedly returns, or is becoming larger, even if the discomfort is manageable. Obtain prompt care when pain interferes with sitting or walking, pus or unpleasant-smelling fluid appears, or nearby skin becomes increasingly red and warm. Fever, chills, spreading redness, or feeling markedly unwell warrant urgent evaluation. A newly noticed vulval lump after menopause also needs an examination.
