Can a Bartholin cyst be dangerous?

A blocked duct can hold fluid without causing harm or significant discomfort. The concern changes if bacteria infect the collection and an abscess forms. Rarely, a lump in the Bartholin area has another cause, which is why new or atypical findings require an examination.

An uncomplicated cyst may feel like a one-sided, smooth swelling near the vaginal opening and can cause no pain. A Bartholin abscess commonly presents with intense vulval pain, a rapidly enlarging tender lump, warmth or redness. Sitting, walking and sex may become difficult.

Pain does not establish the cause on its own, and lack of pain does not rule out the need for review. The clinician checks the lump and surrounding skin, considers your age and health history, and decides whether drainage, testing or another assessment is indicated.

For mild discomfort, soaking in warm water and using a simple pain reliever that is safe for you may help. Check medicine labels and seek pharmacist advice if you are pregnant, take other medicines, have allergies, or have kidney, liver, stomach or bleeding problems. Never cut, lance or force fluid from the lump.

Have a new, persistent or enlarging swelling examined. A clinician may monitor a small symptom-free cyst or drain a painful abscess. Keeping a drainage path open with a catheter or marsupialisation can be discussed when clinically suitable, particularly after recurrence.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or quickly worsening pain, fast-growing swelling, fever, chills, spreading redness, weakness, confusion, faintness or feeling acutely unwell. Difficulty passing urine or pain that prevents you from moving normally also calls for rapid assessment.

Arrange timely review of any firm, fixed or irregular mass, broken skin, unexplained bleeding or persistent colour change. A new Bartholin-area lump after menopause needs direct examination even when it is not sore, because other conditions must be excluded.

Ask whether the swelling is a cyst or an abscess, whether infection extends into nearby tissue, and what treatment is needed now. You can also ask what led to the diagnosis, whether a sample or further test is appropriate, and how to recognise a problem during recovery.
