Caring for a Bartholin cyst at home

Warm sitz baths, gentle cleaning and avoiding pressure are reasonable comfort measures. Home care cannot reliably treat an abscess, so worsening pain, fever or pus needs medical attention.

A blocked Bartholin gland duct can leave a soft, one-sided lump near the vaginal opening. A small cyst may cause no discomfort, while a larger one can cause pressure during walking, sitting or sex. Infection can turn the fluid pocket into an abscess that becomes very tender and swollen.

Not every vulval lump is a Bartholin cyst. An examination is sensible when you are unsure what the lump is, it persists, it returns, or it appears for the first time after menopause.

Sit in comfortably warm water for a short period several times across the day if that feels soothing. Clean only the external area with water, pat rather than rub, and choose loose underwear and clothing. Avoid sex or exercise that puts painful pressure on the lump.

Do not insert needles, apply force, or use harsh antiseptics and fragranced products. If the cyst opens naturally, let it drain without squeezing, place a clean pad in your underwear and wash your hands before and after changing it.

Seek prompt assessment if pain is increasing, the lump grows quickly, redness spreads, pus appears, or sitting and walking become difficult. Fever, chills or feeling unwell can accompany an abscess and should not be managed only at home.

Urgent care is appropriate for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, breathing difficulty or rapidly spreading redness. Recurrent cysts also merit an appointment because a clinician can discuss drainage options designed to keep an opening for fluid.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, whether infection is present, and what changes should trigger a return visit. For a recurring lump, ask whether a drainage procedure could reduce repeated blockage and what recovery care would involve.
