Can Barrett's oesophagus be cured?

The right goal depends on whether biopsies show metaplasia alone, dysplasia, or an early cancer.

Acid-suppressing medicines reduce irritation from reflux and help inflammation heal, but they do not reliably remove the Barrett's lining. Anti-reflux surgery may be considered for selected reflux problems; it is not used simply to erase the cell change.

When dysplasia is confirmed, endoscopic therapy can remove visible abnormal areas and treat the remaining Barrett's lining. Doctors may call the result eradication of abnormal tissue rather than a cure because changed cells can be found again later.

Clarify the exact wording of your biopsy report before comparing treatment options. Barrett's oesophagus without dysplasia is commonly managed with reflux treatment and scheduled endoscopy, while confirmed dysplasia may lead to endoscopic removal or ablation.

Keep taking medicines according to the prescription, attend planned procedures, and tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding before an endoscopy. After endoscopic treatment, follow-up remains necessary to check healing and look for residual or returning Barrett's tissue.

Contact a clinician without waiting for your routine appointment if swallowing becomes progressively harder, food catches in your chest, vomiting persists, or you lose weight without intending to. These symptoms require assessment and cannot be explained by a biopsy label alone.

Vomiting blood, black stools, inability to keep liquids down, or intense chest pain calls for urgent medical help. Chest pain with breathing difficulty, faintness, sweating, or spreading pain should be treated as an emergency.
