Barking cough and sore throat: what to know

Coughing can dry and inflame the throat, while mucus from allergic rhinitis can irritate it. A common cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may cause both symptoms. Tonsillitis and strep throat can cause marked throat pain, though a barking sound points more toward upper-airway irritation than a specific diagnosis. Acid reflux may be relevant when cough and throat discomfort are worse after eating or lying down.

Sip water or warm drinks and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Rest the voice, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use saline for nasal drainage. Follow the label for suitable pain relief and check with a pharmacist for children, pregnancy, or other medical conditions. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover prescriptions.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, drooling with inability to swallow, severe dehydration, or rapidly increasing throat swelling. Seek same-day medical advice for a muffled voice, one-sided throat swelling, severe pain, or a person who appears very unwell. Arrange review if symptoms persist, recur, or prevent drinking and sleep.
