What should you know about bariatric compression garments?

They may be made to standard sizing or custom measurements and can cover a leg, arm, trunk, or another region. A trained clinician should choose the style and pressure after checking circulation, skin condition, body shape, mobility, and the cause of swelling.

A well-fitted garment gives graded, even support without rolling into a tight band. Flat-knit or custom-made designs may better accommodate folds, unusual contours, or marked differences in limb width. Features such as zips, fastening panels, or separate pieces can make dressing easier.

Compression helps limit fluid build-up and supports the effect of movement, but it does not replace skin care, exercise, or other parts of a lymphoedema plan. Body measurements can change as swelling changes, so an older garment may stop fitting correctly.

Put the garment on exactly as demonstrated, smoothing wrinkles and checking that edges do not curl. Gloves, a donning aid, or help from a carer may reduce pulling and make placement more accurate. Follow the prescribed wearing schedule rather than adding extra hours on your own.

Inspect the covered skin every day, including within skin folds, and keep it clean and dry. Wash and dry the garment according to its care label. Arrange reassessment if it slips, cuts in, becomes difficult to apply, or no longer controls swelling.

Remove the garment and contact your clinician promptly if it causes new numbness, tingling, increasing pain, a cold or discoloured hand or foot, broken skin, blisters, or a deep pressure mark that does not fade. Sudden swelling or a major change in limb shape also needs assessment before compression continues.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a hot, red, painful swollen limb. Fever with rapidly spreading redness may indicate a skin infection and requires prompt medical advice.
