What should you know about bananas and heartburn?

Short answer
Bananas may be comfortable for some people with heartburn and aggravate symptoms for others; the pattern matters more than the fruit alone.

What heartburn after banana may mean
Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone caused by stomach contents moving upward. A banana may be blamed when the trigger is actually a large meal, rich topping, lying down soon after eating or an existing Acid Reflux problem. Gastritis, a hiatus hernia or a peptic ulcer can also cause upper digestive discomfort, so recurring symptoms should not be explained by food alone.
Managing a suspected food trigger
Write down the banana’s ripeness and portion, what you ate with it, and when burning began. If symptoms are mild and your clinician has not advised avoidance, compare a small amount on a different day rather than changing many foods together. Eat at a steady pace, remain upright after meals and use Acid Reflux Medication only as directed. Avoid taking extra doses to compensate for a trigger meal.
Warning signs
Get emergency help for severe or unfamiliar chest pain, pressure, breathlessness, sweating, faintness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Seek prompt medical review for trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, black stools, vomiting blood, unexplained weight loss or heartburn that keeps returning. These features need assessment even when banana seems to be the trigger.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms are consistent with reflux, gastritis or another condition, how to use treatment safely, and whether any evaluation is appropriate.
