Balloons, blisters and liquid nitrogen safety

These are separate situations. A balloon is not protective equipment or a safe storage vessel. A blister on treated skin forms because freezing temporarily injures the targeted tissue and separates skin layers.

Liquid nitrogen is an extremely cold cryogenic material. It boils into gas at room conditions, so confinement in unsuitable or sealed flexible items can cause rupture, splashing and cold injury. Skin contact may freeze tissue before pain provides enough warning.

In dermatology, a clinician applies a controlled amount to selected lesions. Redness, swelling and a clear or blood-tinged blister can follow. The blister may look like a small balloon, but it should usually be left intact because its surface protects the healing skin beneath.

Only trained people using approved cryogenic containers and protective equipment should handle liquid nitrogen. Do not touch it, pour it into household objects, seal it in a container or use it for home lesion removal.

After professional cryotherapy, follow the clinic's wound instructions. Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and use a simple dressing if clothing rubs it. If a large blister is uncomfortable, contact the treating clinic rather than puncturing it yourself.

For a splash on skin, move away from the source, remove clothing that is not frozen to the body and rinse with lukewarm water. Do not rub the area or apply direct heat. Eye exposure, extensive freezing, numb or waxy skin, or breathing difficulty requires urgent medical help.

Following cryotherapy, seek care for pain that keeps worsening, spreading redness, pus, fever, heavy bleeding or loss of sensation beyond the treated spot. Contact the clinic if you are unsure whether the reaction matches the aftercare advice you received.

Ask which lesion is being treated, what skin reaction to expect, how to clean and cover the site, and when it should be reviewed. Mention poor circulation, reduced sensation, healing problems or previous unusual reactions to cold.
