Razor Bumps on a Bald Head: Prevention and Care

They often appear after a close shave and may itch, sting or surround a visible trapped hair. Curly or tightly coiled hair is more likely to re-enter nearby skin after cutting.

Pseudofolliculitis describes irritation caused by ingrown shaved hairs. Folliculitis can also produce tender or pus-filled bumps when hair follicles become inflamed or infected. Acne and reactions to shaving products can look similar, so location, timing and the presence of trapped hairs help distinguish them.

Repeated inflammation can leave darker marks or raised scars, particularly when bumps are squeezed or shaving continues across active lesions.

Let inflamed skin settle before shaving again. Wash gently, apply a warm compress and avoid digging out hairs with needles or tweezers. When shaving resumes, soften the hair, use a lubricating gel, move in the direction of growth and avoid repeated passes.

An electric clipper that leaves slight stubble may reduce hairs curling back into skin. Keep blades and clipper heads clean, do not share them, and choose fragrance-free aftercare if scented products sting. A clinician can discuss topical medicines or hair-reduction treatment when careful technique is not enough.

Book an appointment if bumps keep returning, leave thick scars or dark marks, or fail to improve after changing shaving habits. Seek prompt care if redness spreads, the scalp becomes hot or increasingly painful, drainage is extensive, or fever develops. Those features may indicate an infection that needs targeted treatment.
