What should you know about bad itch in throat?

An itchy throat can occur with Allergic Rhinitis, a Common Cold, dry air, smoke, reflux or voice strain. House Dust Mite Allergy may cause a recurring itchy throat alongside sneezing or a runny nose. Food Allergy can present with throat itching soon after eating a particular food, sometimes with lip swelling, hives, vomiting or wheezing. Note the timing, triggers, fever, cough, nasal symptoms and whether swallowing is painful.

Sip water, avoid smoke and other irritants, and use a humidified environment if dry air is aggravating the sensation. Warm fluids or a suitable lozenge may soothe irritation. Avoid foods that have previously triggered symptoms until you have medical advice. Allergy Medication may help some allergy patterns, but a pharmacist or clinician should check the product and your other medicines before use. A persistent symptom needs an examination rather than repeated self-treatment.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, throat tightness, tongue or facial swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives, especially after food or medicine. Arrange a clinical review for symptoms that persist, recur with eating, cause painful swallowing, or come with high fever, dehydration or worsening illness. Do not wait for a rash before seeking help if breathing or swallowing is affected.
