Early shedding, redness, crusting, and an uneven appearance can occur during normal healing, so the final cosmetic result cannot be judged immediately. Increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or darkening skin is different: these changes need prompt contact with the treating clinic or another qualified clinician.

Cosmetic concerns include a hairline that looks too straight or poorly matched to facial features, grafts pointing at unnatural angles, sparse coverage, patchy growth, or an obvious difference between transplanted and existing hair. The donor area may look moth-eaten if follicles were removed unevenly or too densely. Raised, widened, pale, or dark scars can also affect the appearance.

Not every concern reflects failed surgery. Transplanted hairs commonly pass through shedding and regrowth phases, while swelling and crusts temporarily distort the pattern. Comparison with the clinic's healing schedule, procedure photographs, and documented graft plan helps separate expected recovery from a lasting design or growth problem.

Follow the written aftercare instructions, avoid picking crusts, and do not apply unapproved oils, dyes, concealers, or medicines to healing skin. Take clear photographs in similar lighting so changes can be compared over time. Contact the clinic with the date of the procedure, the areas affected, and any pain, drainage, swelling, or loss of sensation.

For persistent cosmetic problems, seek an assessment from a dermatologist or experienced hair-restoration surgeon who was not involved in the procedure. They can examine donor supply, scalp scarring, hair direction, density, and ongoing hair loss before discussing camouflage, medical treatment, scar care, graft removal, or corrective transplantation. Revision should be planned only after the scalp and growth pattern are ready to assess.

Obtain urgent assessment for worsening pain, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, pus, bad-smelling drainage, fever, chills, heavy bleeding, facial swelling that affects the eyes or breathing, or skin that becomes grey, dusky, or black. Sudden chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, or one-sided leg swelling requires emergency care. These are medical warning signs rather than questions about hair density.

Ask whether healing matches the procedure stage, whether infection or impaired blood supply needs treatment, and when growth can be assessed fairly. For a second opinion, ask how much usable donor hair remains, whether existing hair loss is still progressing, which correction options fit the specific defect, and what additional scarring each option could cause.
