Using Bactroban on boils

A boil is a deeper infection around a hair follicle that forms a tender lump containing pus. Mupirocin works at the skin surface, so it may not penetrate the enclosed pocket. A clinician can decide whether the lump should be allowed to drain, opened in a minor procedure, or treated with another antibiotic.

A small tender bump can have several causes, including an inflamed cyst or follicle, and not every skin lump is a boil. A soft or fluctuant centre suggests collected fluid, while surrounding heat, swelling, and worsening pain can indicate infection extending beyond the pocket.

Recurrent boils may require a closer look at bacterial carriage, skin conditions, medicines, or health problems that affect immune defence. Repeatedly applying leftover ointment can mask surface changes without addressing the reason they return.

Hold a clean warm compress against the closed boil for comfort and natural drainage. Do not squeeze, pierce, cut, or inject it yourself; pressure can push infection into nearby tissue. Wash your hands after touching the area, cover drainage with a clean dressing, and avoid sharing towels or razors.

Use Bactroban only if it was prescribed for this episode, following the application directions and course. If the boil opens, avoid contaminating the tube tip and dispose of used dressings carefully.

Arrange prompt care for a boil on the face, rapidly increasing pain or swelling, spreading redness, fever, chills, red streaks, or a cluster of connected boils. The same applies when a boil persists, keeps returning, or develops in someone with diabetes or reduced immune defences.

Seek urgent help if you feel seriously unwell, become confused or faint, or notice breathing difficulty. Do not delay assessment while waiting for topical treatment to work when warning signs are progressing.

Ask whether the lump contains drainable pus, whether a sample should be taken, and whether nearby skin is also infected. Confirm how to dress the site, what pain relief is suitable, and how to reduce spread at home. For recurring boils, ask whether household contacts or an underlying condition should be considered.
