What should you know about bacterial skin rash?

Possible clues include increasing warmth, tenderness, swelling, pus, crusting, or redness that expands beyond its starting point. These changes can also have non-bacterial causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Bacteria may affect the surface, a hair follicle, a wound, or deeper layers of skin. A clinician considers the rash pattern, pain, warmth, drainage, recent cuts or shaving, insect bites, and health conditions that affect healing.

Itching does not establish a bacterial cause. Ringworm, scabies, eczema, psoriasis, heat rash, and reactions to medicines or skin products can resemble infection but require different care.

Gently wash the area, pat it dry, and cover any draining spot with a clean dressing. Avoid squeezing, scratching, shaving over it, or sharing towels and razors. Wash your hands after touching the area.

Arrange medical review if the area is painful, hot, swollen, producing pus, or continuing to spread. Treatment may involve drainage, a topical medicine, or an oral antibiotic depending on the location and depth. Do not use leftover antibiotics or another person's prescription.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly expanding redness, severe or escalating pain, red streaks, fever, shaking chills, confusion, dizziness, purple or black skin, or blisters over a painful area. Infection near an eye, extensive facial swelling, or difficulty breathing also needs emergency care.

Earlier review is sensible for a rash around a surgical wound, bite, burn, or foot ulcer, and for anyone with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced immunity, or a history of recurring skin infections.

Ask whether the problem appears superficial or deep, whether a sample or drainage is needed, how to clean and cover it, and which changes should trigger reassessment. Mention recent antibiotics, medication allergies, travel, water exposure, animal contact, and similar rashes among household members.
