Baclofen Muscle Relaxant: Patient Guide

It changes nerve signalling involved in persistent muscle tightness. It is not automatically suitable for every ordinary muscle ache or short-lived cramp, and the prescriber chooses it according to the cause, other medicines, kidney function, and likely side effects.

By reducing excessive muscle contraction, baclofen may ease stiffness, painful spasms, and difficulty moving. It does not repair an injured muscle or remove every cause of back muscle spasm or muscle cramps. Sleepiness, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and blurred vision can occur, particularly while treatment is being adjusted.

Alcohol and other sedating medicines may intensify drowsiness. Driving, cycling, or operating machinery is unsafe until you know how the medicine affects alertness, balance, and vision.

Take baclofen exactly as prescribed and follow the label if a dose is missed; do not double it unless your prescriber specifically instructs you. Do not stop regular treatment suddenly because withdrawal can cause worsening spasms, confusion, hallucinations, mood or behaviour changes, a fast heartbeat, or seizures. Tell the prescriber about kidney problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all medicines or substances that cause sleepiness.

Contact the prescriber promptly if troublesome sleepiness, dizziness, weakness, vision changes, or worsening spasms persist. Seek urgent help after taking too much, or for severe confusion, a seizure, fainting, marked breathing difficulty, inability to wake normally, or swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat. Do not drive yourself when severely drowsy or unwell.

Confirm the treatment goal, how dose changes will be made, what to do after a missed dose, and which side effects warrant a call. Ask how baclofen interacts with your other medicines and how it would be reduced if treatment ends.
