Afterward, walking usually begins in a controlled way and increases according to the surgical team's advice. Keep the wound clean as directed, take prescribed medicine correctly and follow restrictions on lifting, bending, driving and work. Physiotherapy may focus on mobility, confidence, strength and a graded return to daily activity.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain that is not controlled as expected, or new numbness or weakness. New bladder or bowel control problems or numbness around the groin or saddle area require emergency assessment.

Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, coughing blood, or a swollen and painful calf also needs urgent emergency care. Follow the discharge contact route even if the symptom develops after you return home.

Ask which spinal level will be decompressed, which symptoms the operation is intended to improve, and whether fusion is part of the plan. Discuss the main risks in your own health context, likely activity restrictions, rehabilitation milestones and alternatives such as continued non-operative care or endoscopic spine surgery when technically suitable.
