Itchy throat at the back: what to know

Allergic Rhinitis can cause an itchy throat alongside sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, and itchy eyes. House Dust Mite Allergy may produce symptoms that are worse indoors or on waking. A Common Cold can begin with throat irritation and later bring cough, congestion, or tiredness. Reflux, dry air, smoke, and voice strain can also irritate the throat.

Sip water or a warm drink, avoid smoke and strongly scented products, and use a humidifier if indoor air is dry. Call emergency services for trouble breathing, wheezing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, or inability to swallow saliva. Arrange medical review if the itch persists, keeps returning, is accompanied by fever or severe pain, or causes a persistent cough or voice change.
