Short answer

An ache behind both legs may follow muscle overuse or prolonged posture, but nerve, joint, medicine-related, and circulation problems can also cause it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Movement
Comfortable regular movement is often preferable to prolonged inactivity.
Review
Persistent aching with numbness or weakness warrants clinical assessment.

A clear overview

Aching after a new workout that eases with recovery differs from persistent discomfort associated with weakness, numbness, swelling, or a change in walking tolerance.

Clues in the way your legs ache

General soreness after climbing, lifting or returning to exercise often reflects muscle loading. An ache that travels from the lower back or buttocks, or comes with pins and needles, may involve irritated nerves. Lumbar Spondylosis can present with lower-back stiffness and, when nerves are affected, symptoms in a leg; it cannot be confirmed from aching alone.

Tell a clinician if walking predictably brings on symptoms that ease when you stop or change posture. That pattern helps them distinguish spinal, muscular, joint and circulation causes.

Steps that may ease mild aching

Change position regularly and use easy, pain-limited movement rather than prolonged bed rest. Scale back strenuous activity temporarily, then build it up gradually as comfort returns. Supportive footwear, hydration and a warm shower may help when the muscles feel generally tired.

Book a routine appointment when the ache persists, repeatedly interrupts sleep, follows a medicine change, or limits everyday activity. Bring a list of medicines and explain what makes the symptoms better or worse.

Warning signs that should not wait

Get urgent medical help if one leg becomes noticeably swollen, warm, red or unusually tender, or if either foot turns pale, blue or cold. Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, faintness or coughing blood requires emergency services.

Emergency assessment is also appropriate for new bladder or bowel difficulty, numbness around the seat area, or worsening weakness in both legs. Fever with severe pain, inability to walk, or symptoms after a serious fall also needs prompt care.

Preparing for an appointment

Ask whether the examination suggests muscle fatigue, nerve irritation, a joint problem or altered blood flow. Useful follow-up questions include which exercises fit the findings, whether any medicine could contribute, and when reassessment is needed.

Questions people ask

Why do both legs ache after sitting?

A fixed position can leave muscles stiff or aggravate symptoms referred from the lower back. Frequent position changes may help, but continuing or neurological symptoms need assessment.

Could a medicine make my legs ache?

Some medicines can contribute to muscle discomfort or cramps. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own; ask the prescriber or pharmacist to review the timing and alternatives.

When should aching after exercise improve?

Uncomplicated post-exercise soreness should trend toward easier movement rather than steadily worsening. Marked swelling, severe weakness, dark urine or feeling very unwell needs prompt medical advice.
