What should you know about Bacillus cereus food poisoning?

Short answer
Bacillus cereus food poisoning usually causes short-lived vomiting or diarrhoea after toxins contaminate improperly stored food.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cause
- Bacterial toxins in improperly handled or stored food
- Main patterns
- Vomiting or watery diarrhoea with cramps
- First priority
- Replace lost water and salts
What it means
Bacillus cereus is a bacterium that can survive in some foods and produce toxins when food is handled or stored unsafely. The vomiting pattern often starts relatively soon after the meal, while the diarrhoeal pattern may begin later and include abdominal cramps. Nausea can accompany either pattern. Fever is possible but not necessary. This is a form of food poisoning, and symptoms may overlap with other infections, so the timing and symptoms cannot always identify the germ by themselves.
What to do
Take small, regular sips of water or oral rehydration solution. Pause briefly if vomiting returns, then restart with tiny amounts. When appetite returns, choose simple foods and avoid alcohol, rich meals and anything suspected of being unsafe. Wash hands with soap, clean shared surfaces and avoid preparing food for others while ill. Oral rehydration therapy replaces water and salts; IV fluid therapy may be needed when dehydration is severe or drinking is not possible.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, no or very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or inability to retain fluids. Contact a clinician when symptoms are prolonged, fever is persistent, or the affected person is a baby, older adult, pregnant, or living with a condition that increases dehydration risk.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether dehydration is present, whether a stool test is useful, what rehydration plan fits you, and which medicines are safe with your current symptoms.
