An ingrown hair forms when a cut or curled hair grows into nearby skin. Products that exfoliate may help release some superficial trapped hairs, yet strong acids, alcohol or fragrance can sting, dry the area or leave dark marks after inflammation.

Small bumps after shaving or waxing can be simple ingrown hairs. Razor bumps occur when curved hairs re-enter the skin and drive inflammation, while folliculitis involves inflamed hair follicles and may produce tender or pus-filled spots. Rough, widespread plugs that are not linked to hair removal may have another explanation, such as keratosis pilaris.
