Azo for kidney stones

A kidney stone can irritate the urinary tract as it moves, causing flank pain, cramping, blood in urine or painful urination. Phenazopyridine, the active ingredient in some Azo products, is a urinary pain reliever rather than a stone treatment. It can turn urine orange or red-orange, which may make visual monitoring harder. The product and your medical history matter, particularly if you have kidney disease or difficulty passing urine.

Check the package ingredients and ask a pharmacist or clinician whether the product is suitable for you. Do not exceed the labelled directions or use it to postpone care. Drink fluids in line with clinical advice; forcing fluids during severe pain or blockage is not a solution. Arrange a GP consultation if pain continues, recurs or is accompanied by urinary changes. An abdominal ultrasound may be used to assess the urinary tract.

Get urgent help for severe or unrelenting flank or abdominal pain, fever, chills, vomiting, inability to pass urine or feeling faint. A blocked urinary system with infection can become dangerous. Reduced urine and dizziness can also signal dehydration. Do not rely on Azo to mask these warning signs.
