What should you know about Axiron testosterone gel?

Although people may call it a gel, Axiron is a topical solution applied with its own applicator. Its instructions and dose are specific to that product, so it should not be swapped with another testosterone gel or solution without a prescriber changing the plan.

Axiron was designed as testosterone replacement for men with confirmed low testosterone. Testosterone is sometimes considered for women in selected circumstances, but the product, dose and monitoring need specialist oversight because male replacement doses are not suitable to copy.

Exposure can also occur accidentally when another person touches unwashed, uncovered application skin. This matters especially for children and anyone who is pregnant or could be pregnant, because testosterone can cause harmful hormone effects.

Use only the prescribed amount and the application site named in the product instructions. Let the solution dry, cover the site with clothing, wash your hands with soap and water, and keep the container where children cannot reach it. Do not apply someone else’s medicine to yourself.

Before direct skin contact, the person using Axiron should wash the application area thoroughly. If another person touches an unwashed site, wash the exposed skin promptly with soap and water. Tell the prescriber about skin reactions, acne, increased facial or body hair, scalp hair changes, voice changes, menstrual changes or mood symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, sudden weakness on one side, or a painful swollen leg. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for a routine medicine review.

Contact the prescriber promptly after accidental exposure during pregnancy, exposure involving a child, or new difficulty passing urine. A child who develops enlarged genitals, early pubic hair, unexpected erections or unusually aggressive behaviour after possible contact should be assessed without delay.

Ask what symptom the testosterone is intended to treat, why this formulation and dose were chosen, which blood tests or examinations are needed, and what changes should trigger stopping or adjusting treatment.
