How to Reduce and Manage Cradle Cap

How the structures involved in Cradle Cap differ from normal

Short answer

Cradle cap cannot always be prevented, but gentle washing and careful scale removal can limit buildup without irritating a baby's scalp.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cradle cap means

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry-looking scales on a baby's scalp. It is not caused by poor hygiene, and ordinary cradle cap is not contagious. The skin underneath may look mildly pink, but the baby is generally comfortable.

Scales can also appear around the eyebrows, ears, or skin folds. Thick buildup may hold loose hairs, which usually release as the scale clears. Picking firmly can injure the skin and create an entry point for infection.

Use gentle scalp care

Wash the scalp with a mild, fragrance-free baby shampoo and rinse it fully. While the scale is softened, loosen it lightly with a soft baby brush or fine-toothed comb; stop if the skin becomes sore or bleeds.

For stubborn scale, a clinician may suggest a small amount of plain emollient before washing. Remove oily residue afterward because leaving a heavy coating can worsen buildup. Avoid adult dandruff shampoos, essential oils, and medicated creams unless a clinician has selected them for the baby's age and skin.

When your baby needs medical care

Arrange an assessment if the rash spreads widely, becomes very red or swollen, oozes, smells unpleasant, or seems painful or intensely itchy. Prompt care is also appropriate if your baby has a fever, feeds poorly, seems unusually sleepy, or develops blisters.

A clinician can distinguish cradle cap from eczema, infection, or another rash. Persistent or inflamed patches may need a prescribed antifungal or anti-inflammatory treatment rather than more vigorous scrubbing.

Questions for your baby's clinician

Ask whether the pattern is typical cradle cap, which shampoo or emollient suits your baby's age, and how often to wash the scalp. If treatment is prescribed, confirm exactly where to apply it, how long to use it, and which skin changes mean you should stop.

Questions people ask

Does cradle cap mean my baby's scalp is dirty?

No. Cradle cap can occur despite careful hygiene, and forceful or frequent scrubbing may irritate the scalp.

Can I peel off cradle cap scales?

Soften and loosen scales gently instead. Do not pull attached scale or continue if the skin becomes tender, raw, or bleeds.

Should I use an adult dandruff shampoo?

Not without medical guidance. Adult products may contain ingredients or strengths that are unsuitable for an infant's skin.
